Salem, VA - Hollins came into the second and final day of the 2016 Roanoke College Tip-Off Tournament looking to get back in the win column after falling to Salem, by three points, in the opener. Hollins used an 8-0 run to close the first quarter and carry it into the beginning stages of the second, to pull away from the Gophers and pick up the win, 55-44.
After racing out to a 9-5 advantage, Hollins saw Goucher battle back to tie the score heading into the closing seconds of the opening frame. Deana Campbell hit a layup to give the green and gold the lead after one, 11-9. The layup was the first two of an 8-0 run that allowed Hollins some separation and carried the lead into the half, 24-16.
Campbell pushed the lead to 10 with another basket to start the second 20 minutes. After a pair of Sally Sroge free throws, the advantage had grown to 14 points, 33-19. However, the largest lead of the afternoon would be short lived. Over the next 10 minutes of play, the Gophers would come all the way back and cut the Hollins lead to just two points, 40-38, with 5:27 left on the clock. Hollins hit just 12 of 21 free throws for the game, but four big made freebies would help keep Goucher from completing the comeback as Hollins pushed her record to 2-1 with a 55-44 victory.
For the third time in as many games, senior Jewellanna Parfitt led the team in scoring. Parfitt posted 17 points and 13 rebounds and for her efforts over the weekend was named to the All Tournament Team. Sroge finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while Campbell added nine points and 12 rebounds. Nicolette Valencia regisitered eight points and Porsha Waddey filled the stat sheet with two points, eight rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
Katie Pacak led Goucher with 12 points with Shalom Omo-Osagie added 11 points and nine boards.
Hollins will take her 2-1 mark into their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and home opener against Virginia Wesleyan. Hollins tips with the Marlins on Sunday, November 27th at 2:00pm.
