Roanoke, VA - The Hollins University lacrosse team started her 2017 season when they played host to Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon. The final day of February marked the first of five consecutive home games for the young squad that features 10, first and second year players. The Knights came into the matchup looking to break a three game losing streak to start their season.
First-year Hope Shaw got the season off to a good start by netting her first collegiate goal to start the game. Southern Virginia would answer with a trio of goals to push the lead to 3-1. Allie Helmbrecht would cut the deficit to one as the sophomore scored the first of her team high five goals. However, SVU would enjoy a majority of the remainder of the half in the Hollins zone, accumulating a 27-12 shot advantage by halftime. At the break it was the visitors enjoying 12-7 advantage. As the temperature dropped and the rain began to pick up, Hollins would struggle for the opening stages of the second frame as the visitors would score five unanswered after the break. Helmbrecht scored two of the final three goals of the afternoon but it wasn't enough as Hollins fell in their opener, 18-9.
After a 39 score effort in her first-year season, Helmbrecht started her second year with five goals and a pair of assists. Shaw scored three times on just four shots while picking up a game high nine ground balls. Senior Rachel Hertzler scored on one of Helmbrecht's helpers and first-year keeper Delaney Waller was solid in net, recording 12 saves in her Hollins debut.
Lauren Thatcher led Southern Virginia with five goals and an assist while Zoe Bradshaw added four scores and a pair of helpers. Claire Houghtaling registered three goals, two assists, two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Keilani Torres-Lopez stopped four shots on goal in picking up the win in net.
