Spartanburg, SC - The Hollins swim team opened her 2107-18 season with a trip to South Carolina to compete in the Converse Women's Invitational over the weekend. The two-day event featured eight schools representing various divisions of NCAA and NAIA. The only three NCAA DIII schools to compete were Hollins, her arch rivals from Sweet Brair, and fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Guilford.
The event got under way with the 200 Medley Relay and the Hollins team placed eighth. Grace Davis, Hanna DeVarona, Maya Schattgen, and Alex Sanchez set the tone for the meet by finishing ahead of the Sweet Briar team by almost a full 13 seconds. The longest event of the weekend, the 1650 Freestyle, was the first individual competition and senior Dani Raymond secured points by placing 11th with a time of 22:34.41.
Hollins best individual finish occurred when Sanchez earned a top 10 in the 200 Freestyle while DeVarona matched Raymond's 11th place finish in the 200 Breaststroke. Schattgen earned points in the 200 Backstroke by finishing 12th and Hollins wrapped up the first day with a fifth place in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Sanchez, Davis, and Schattgen teamed with Emily Miehlke in the relay finale.
The young Hollins squad had a little tougher go on day two. The best individual finish came when DeVarona finished 10th in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:18.06. Schattgen, in the 100 Butterfly, finished 13th while Sanchez earned a 14th place finish in the 100 Freestyle. In the final event of the meet, the Hollins quartet of Sanchez, Miehlke, Schattgen, and Davis came home eighth.
Considering the level of competition, four NCAA DII and one NAIA institution, Hollins set several personal bests as well as just missing some program records in most of the swimmers first collegiate competition. The team will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Lexington to compete at the 2017 ODAC Relays, hosted by Washington and Lee.
