ROANOKE, Va. - As the 2019-20 winter sports season gets set to kick off, the Hollins Sports Information office will preview swimming and basketball. The next preview is the 2019-20 Hollins basketball team.

As the HU basketball team gets set to kick off the 2019-20 season, head coach Emilee Dunton will rely on a strong group of returners, along with a couple incoming first-years, to have a significant impact.

The team returns leading scorer Kayla Surles. Surles averaged 13.9 PPG, which led the team and was T-8th in the ODAC. She also describes herself as a "pass-first" point guard, which makes sense as she finished third in the conference in assists/game with 4.1.

Surles will be helped down low by Keyazia Taylor, a strong post presence who finished the 2018-19 season ranked T-1st in the ODAC in RPG with 10.5 and first in blocks/game with 2.4. Yasmine Tyler will also be a force down low as the almost six-footer averaged 6.6 PPG.

On the perimeter, Kayla's twin sister Keenan Surles will be a threat to shoot the three, as she was the Green and Gold's third leading point-getter last year and averaged 8.5 threes a game.

The team will also lean heavily on two first-year players: Lenah Clements and Serena Lytton. Clements comes to Hollins from Greensville County High School where she scored 1,947 points and was a two-time All-VHSL selection. Lytton was also a two-time All-VHSL selection out of Patrich Henry High School. Both players will be counted on to help HU run the floor and both have the ability to drive to the basket or shoot from the outside.

Hollins will open the 2019-20 season with a home game on Sunday against visiting Pfeiffer University. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 pm.
