ROANOKE, Va. - Consider the Vix, nixed.
Hollins welcomed Sweet Briar to Marjorie T. Berkley Field on Wednesday and when the final horn rang across the field, it was the Green and Gold celebrating a hard earned shutout as HU took down the visiting Vixens 2-0.
Hollins got on the board in the 15th minute when, about 35 yards out, Stephanie Samoy played a pass down the middle to a streaking Sydney Pickett. Pickett outran the Vixen defense and put a shot past the goalkeeper to put HU ahead 1-0. The goal was Pickett's first of the season and Samoy's second assist.
While Pickett's goal proved to be the game winner, Hollins added an insurance goal just before halftime when Mitch Mitchell played a ball near the Sweet Briar corner, then found Samoy, who dribbled and put up a shot that found its way over the head of the goalkeeper, putting Hollins ahead 2-0. Samoy's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season while the assist was Mitchell's first.
The Hollins defense did the rest, keeping Sweet Briar off the board, even in the second half that saw the Vixens pushing forward and attacking more. But in all, Hollins only allowed one shot on goal, which was saved by Kendra Rich.
The win pushes Hollins to 4-9-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the ODAC.
Hollins will wrap up their road slate with a match on Saturday against nationally ranked Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets are undefeated on the season and checked in at #15 in the latest poll. The match is slated to start at 1 pm.
