Volleyball Sweeps Road Match at Ferrum

Volleyball Sweeps Road Match at Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. --  A common belief in sports is that games can't be won in the first set/half/quarter/period.

For the Hollins volleyball team, Tuesday night's ODAC matchup with Ferrum might have been the exception to the rule.

Trailing 17-13 on the road, Hollins went on a 12-5 run to win set one, 25-21, taking away any momentum Ferrum had, en route to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-15) win. The win sends Hollins to 12-8 overall and 2-3 in the ODAC. The team's 12 wins ties the program record for most wins in a season with the 2010 squad, with nine matches still to play.

How It Happened

Hollins and Ferrum traded points right out of the gate, with HU taking a 7-6 advantage early. The Panthers, however, went on a 6-0 run to take the lead before a Tyler Sesker kill broke Ferrum's point streak. With FC ahead 18-16, Hollins went on their own run to the tune of 6-1, highlighted by two points from Kenna Esquibel and a kill from Charlie Vollmers. An Amanda Mink ace sealed the set win for HU to put them up 1-0.

Ferrum jumped out to a 7-4 lead in set two but just like in the first frame, Hollins answered with a 5-1 run, using kills from Sesker and Esquibel to take the lead. Both teams got into a rhythm in the middle of the set, with Hollins holding a slight 14-13 advantage. But a Panther error combined with back-to-back Esquibel kills, put HU ahead 17-13 and the Green and Gold never looked back. Ferrum was able to pull within two, late, but Hollins ended the set on a 5-2 run, ending with a big block from Vollmers and Sesker to give HU a 2-0 lead.

The final set wasn't close for Ferrum with Hollins pulling ahead 6-2 and maintaining a 6-10 point lead throughout. FC pulled within nine at 24-15 but Sesker's ninth kill of the night slammed the door on any comeback and gave Hollins their second ODAC win of the year.

Esquibel finished the night with a double-double, using a match-high 12 kills along with 12 digs to achieve her first of the season. Sesker added nine kills while Zoe Brooks tallied 17 assists.

Defensively, Hollins finished with a huge night at the net, coming away with 16 assisted blocks, led by Kiki Speights with seven and Hannah Arthur with five.

HU will be back at home on Thursday for a 7 pm ODAC matchup with Randolph-Macon.
